Theatre Improvisation


   This up-on-your-feet, interactive, and fun class is designed to introduce participants to a variety of improvisational theatre games.  Whether you want to be an actor or stand-up comic – even if you just want to learn fun theatre activities to entertain at parties or keep the kids amused – this class has something for everyone!  Participants will learn the basic rules of improve while trying different games and exercises designed to use the body, mind, and simple props and costumes to create, funny, engaging and well-structured stories, situations and scenes.  (Ages 13 – Adult)  Instructor: Madia

Conversational Spanish I

Ballroom Dancing I – Traditional

  Ballroom dancing is culture, art, music, emotion, fitness, and sport.  It is an activity which promotes social graces, self-confidence, and mutual respect and cooperation between partners.  It is also great fun!  This course will enable the student to participate in social occasions requiring ballroom dancing skills, such as weddings, formal, social and business parties, as well as informal occasions requiring the display of social graces.  Featured dances include the Tango, Waltz and Foxtrot. Multi-Genre Writing

   This course is designed to expose beginning to intermediate writers to a number of writing styles and techniques.  Participants will explore the writing process from brainstorming to outlining, to writing and revision.  Feedback will be provided from both the course instructor as well as other participants.  Types of writing discussed include: poetry, short story, non-fiction, dialogue/scene-writing, character development and collaborative writing.  Learn effective writing techniques designed to keep the creative juices flowing while preventing the dreaded “writer’s block.”  You will also practice exercise designed to improve working with images and writing in metaphor.  (Ages 15 to Adult)  Instructor: Madia

Digital Photography I

   This hands-on workshop covers it all!  Starting with photography basics, we’ll quickly move on to mastering the features of your digital camera with easy-to-understand, straight forward language.   Learn the tips and tricks of composition from photography experts, to help you take better pictures for a variety of subjects and settings.  Finally, you will have a chance to practice what you have learned and get valuable feedback from the instructor. Beginning Home Brewing

   Have you ever been intrigued by the prospect of Home Brewing your own Hand Crafted Beer.  Here’s your chance to get the basics (and beyond) from master brewer and WV Brew Pub owner Ned Strauser!  Appreciate the differences between the many styles of beer and learn how they are made.  Through tastings, brewing demonstrations, discussions and additional resources, we start with the basics of equipment and ingredients and pour smoothly toward your final, finished product – your own handmade beer ready to be bottled and enjoyed.  There will be plenty of time for discussions on variations, special techniques and your questions.  Finally, we will be planning a “Graduation Party” following the last class!

At the Crossroads

   Driving with cognitive or other physical impairment associated with “Aging” is not just about remembering how to get home.  As we age we experience changes that can affect driving ability.  This class is designed to provide family and friends with the resources they need to effectively address the safety concerns they may have about an older driver – before an accident or violation occurs.  Strategies, references and resources, including a sample “Driving Agreement,” will be provided to all participants.

SLR Photography

Monologue & Scene Study

   This in-depth workshop, students will learn techniques from a variety of theatrical schools of thought, while using the basic journalistic questions of Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How to break their monologues and scenes down for maximum audience effect.  Participants will have the opportunity to work on several monologues and scenes from the modern theatre.  Memorization is not required, although we will be sharing monologues and scenes with others in the class.  Whether you want to be an actor or just want to improve your public speaking, textual analysis and people skills, this class is designed to help you reach your goals!  (Ages 15 to Adult)  Instructor: Madia

CPR & First Aid

   This CPR and First Aid training is an appropriate class for health care professionals, day care providers, and community members.  Students will learn the recommended cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and how to provide appropriate, immediate care that may be necessary in case of an accident or emergency.  After completion of the class, students will be certified or re-certified in CPR & First Aid for two years.

LEARN TO FLY!!! - Flight Training Program:

  Pierpont Community & Technical College is pleased to announce that you can now learn to fly through our Community Education program.  This program is delivered at the NAEC (Benedum Airport), by the same instructors as our academic professional flight training.  If you have dreamed of flying the skies, this is your chance!  Total cost for flight training will vary according to the level of certification the individual desires, the type of plane required for that certification, the type of instruction required for that certification, and the actual instruction time required.  There is a one-time registration fee of $100 per certification.
